The Village of Oak Harbor is helping to launch a new comprehensive service designed to help families and businesses who are users of Oak Harbor Public Power, reduce their energy usage and their energy costs through energy efficiency.
Efficiency Smart is a new partnership between American Municipal Power (our wholesale electricity provider) and the Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (VEIC) to create an energy efficiency program for subscribing municipal electric utilities. Oak Harbor Public Power has joined Efficiency Smart and is now offering a range of money-saving energy efficiency opportunities to our customers.
Energy efficiency is a clean, economical, sustainable addition to our power supply, which can reduce or offset the growth in electricity demand in our community.. Efficiency Smart promotes local economic development through local investment in energy efficiency, while keeping the local utility competitive with surrounding utilities.
All of our customers - residential, commercial and industrial – can benefit from Efficiency Smart services, through opportunities such as rebates on energy efficient products and incentives to help reduce the up-front costs of investments in energy efficiency.
The efficient products program provides financial incentives at retail outlets to reduce the cost of energy efficient products. Customers will benefit from incentives that reduce the upfront cost of energy efficient lighting, such as compact fluorescent bulbs, which use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs. Incentives are also available for the purchase of energy efficient appliances, such as refrigerators and clothes washers.
For small to medium sized business customers, Efficiency Smart can provide set incentives for approximately 70 different energy efficient improvements. For larger business customers, custom incentives are available based upon their specific needs. Publicly-owned buildings such as local government facilities and schools are also eligible for these incentives. A wide range of energy-efficient technologies will be incentivized by Efficiency Smart, including interior and exterior lighting; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); motors and variable-speed drives; building envelope improvements; and refrigeration.
Overall, Efficiency Smart is projected to result in cumulative energy savings of 70,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) over the next three years across all of the participating municipal electric systems it serves. That’s enough electricity to power approximately 8,000 average homes for one year.
